30 Rock Tracy Morgan delivered a quote that sums up this week's television event: “Live every week like its Shark Week.” Unfortunately, only one week of the year provides all of the drama, gore, and natural wonder of Shark Week. But lucky for it it's that time again.
During the first week of August, Discovery fills the summer doldrums with footage of sharks acting like sharks. Most footage from Shark Week is shot with the best in the latest technology. Every image is as clear and crisp as can be. It’s a visual feast for those addicted to their HD televisions.
Yes, there is sufficient of footage of sharks biting things to a bloody pulp to go around. Shark Week also manages to captures sharks from every sort of angle. We learn about some of their most unknown behaviors, and see a side that is a little less vicious than expected. Sharks are the kings of the sea and during Shark Week they are also kings of the world. Shark Week allows us to get close enough to these creatures without having to risk our limbs.
The series brings its audience in through something of a promise of guilty pleasure (hungry sharks!) but keeps you interested by actually delivering. It’s both a warning of the danger of sharks, and a warming look into their lifestyles. Humans aren’t only attracted to their incredible force, we're also intrigued with their fascinating methods of survival.
Without overanalyzing, Shark Week is the kind of TV we don’t see very much anymore: captivating and always surprising. Mainly, seeing a Great White jump out of the water to devour a seal in slow motion never get old (or easy to watch). Dive in! ~Ian Phillips
